What are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day? Whether you are Irish or simply out to have a good time, Rochester, NY offers its fair share of options for the coming national holiday — from races and parades to music festivals and green beer. Here’s a quick look at Rochester’s St. Patrick Day events:

Painting of the Green and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade

First, Rochester NY will host its annual Painting of the Green ceremony. During the ceremony, patrons mark the parade route. The parade will take place the next day. Rochester locals have been parading in honor of St. Patrick’s day for 39 years; this year’s parade will mark the 40th annual celebration. Bands and other participants will march from East Avenue to Main Street and ultimately end on Plymouth Avenue, according to Free Time Magazine. Organizers announced The Irish Children’s Program as this year’s honoree.

“The mission of the ICP is to promote peace in Northern Ireland ‘One Child At A Time.’ The program accomplishes this by offering these children, ages 10-14, the opportunity to stay with host families around the Rochester area. While here, the ICP arranges many activities including team building exercises, and other shared experiences designed to create friendships that will continue upon their return to Belfast,” the parade’s official site writes of its honoree.

Other St. Patty’s Day Activities

If parades are not your thing, there are plenty of other things to do. Fitness buffs can participate in the annual Running O’ the Green, a five mile race sponsored by Johnny’s Irish Pub. Metal enthusiasts can head out to the Bug Jar for an all day celebration dubbed the St. Patrick’s Day Metal Extravaganza.
